Surface Pattern Design & Illustration Licensing

Nature-inspired patterns and illustrations available for licensing on textiles, home goods, stationery lines, and more. Browse the existing collection or commission custom surface design for your product line.

How Licensing Works

Licensing means you get the rights to use existing artwork on your products without commissioning something from scratch. It's a faster and often more cost-effective way to bring hand-crafted illustration into your product line.

I offer licensing agreements for individual illustrations, pattern collections, and surface designs. Licensing terms are negotiated per project based on the scope of use, product category, region, and duration. If you see something in my collection that would work for your product, get in touch and we'll discuss terms.

If nothing in the existing collection is quite right, I also take on custom surface pattern design commissions. You'll get original artwork designed specifically for your product specifications, production requirements, and brand guidelines.

Where These Patterns Live

Surface patterns and illustrations can be applied to almost any physical product. Here are the most common applications I work with:

Commission Custom
Surface Pattern Design

If the existing library doesn't have what you need, I create custom surface patterns and repeat designs built to your specifications. Custom commissions are ideal when you need patterns that match your brand palette, work with a specific production method, or fit a theme that doesn't exist in the current library.

Custom surface design projects follow a collaborative process: we start with your product specs and visual direction, I develop initial pattern concepts, and we refine through revision rounds until the design is production-ready. You receive the final artwork in whatever format your manufacturer requires.

Custom commissions can be structured as work-for-hire (you own the artwork outright) or as an exclusive license (I retain ownership, you get exclusive use for your product category). We'll discuss which structure makes sense during our initial conversation.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Licensing means you're purchasing the right to use existing artwork from my collection on your products. Commissioning means I create something new from scratch for your specific needs. Licensing is typically faster and more cost-effective. Commissioning gives you something completely custom. Both options are available depending on what your project requires.

  • Patterns and illustrations can be applied to textiles, wallpaper, home goods, stationery products, packaging, apparel, accessories, and more. If you have a product category in mind, reach out and I can tell you whether existing patterns would work or if a custom commission makes more sense.

  • Licensing terms are negotiated per project. Fees depend on the scope of use, product category, territory (regional, national, global), duration, and whether the license is exclusive or non-exclusive. We can agree on clear terms upfront so there are no surprises.

  • Yes. Exclusive licenses are available, meaning no other company can use that pattern in your product category during the license period. Exclusive terms are reflected in the licensing fee. We'll discuss exclusivity options during our initial conversation.

  • That depends on your production requirements. Common formats include high-resolution TIFF or PSD files for textile printing, seamless repeat tiles in vector (AI, SVG) or raster formats, and layered files when colorway flexibility is needed. I'll confirm the right format based on your manufacturer's specifications.

  • Yes. If you see a pattern you like but need it in different colors to match your brand or product line, I can create custom colorways. This is a common request and is typically faster and less expensive than a full custom commission.

  • Surface pattern design is the art of creating repeating patterns and illustrations that are applied to physical products: fabric, wallpaper, packaging, stationery, and more. It combines illustration with technical knowledge of repeat structures, color separations, and production specifications. If you've ever noticed a pattern on a piece of clothing, a notebook cover, or a roll of wrapping paper, that was created by a surface pattern designer.
