Summer Program Illustration System
The Toledo Lucas County Public Library needed a cohesive set of custom illustrations to promote their summer programming across youth, teen, and adult audiences. The goal was to create a visual system that felt bright, playful, and approachable—while remaining flexible enough to work across a wide range of platforms.
Project Overview
This project focused on building a scalable illustration system that could support a large number of programs while maintaining visual consistency.
Rather than creating one-off graphics, the approach centered on developing a cohesive style that could be applied across 30+ individual illustrations—each representing a different program while still feeling part of a unified campaign.
Design Approach
The illustration style was intentionally designed to feel bright, organic, and slightly childlike—creating an inviting, family-friendly tone that appeals to a wide audience.
The process began with black-and-white thumbnail sketches to establish composition and concept before moving into color. This allowed for quick iteration and ensured each illustration communicated clearly at a small scale.
Background-free compositions were used to maximize flexibility, allowing the artwork to be easily placed across print materials, websites, email campaigns, and social media without visual constraints.

“Kallie has been an integral part of the Library’s communications strategy. We work to position the Library as an unmissable positive presence in the community by populating our website, email newsletters, social media, and print with messages and images that connect people with our materials and services. Kallie always takes the time to understand what we are trying to accomplish and how her work supports the strategy. She shows early concepts, checks in throughout projects, and follows through with all elements within our deadlines and budget. The Library’s youth and adult programs consistently meet attendance metrics with her as part of our creative team.”
