Branch Illustration System
The Toledo Lucas County Public Library commissioned a series of custom illustrations representing each of their 20+ branch locations. The goal was to create a cohesive, approachable visual system that reflects the library’s strong community presence while appealing to a family-friendly audience.
Project Overview
This project focused on developing a scalable illustration system that could represent each branch location in a consistent and recognizable way.
The illustrations were designed for use across print materials—including collectible stickers available at each branch—as well as the library’s monthly publication, helping reinforce both brand identity and community engagement.
Design Approach
The illustration style was inspired by childlike, hand-drawn artwork—capturing a sense of playfulness and accessibility while maintaining a level of refinement suitable for a public-facing organization.
Simple shapes, expressive linework, and subtle textures were used to evoke the feel of colored pencil drawings, adding warmth and familiarity. Shading and detail were intentionally balanced to keep the illustrations approachable without appearing overly simplistic.
Each branch illustration was designed to feel unique to its location while still fitting seamlessly within the larger system—ensuring consistency across all applications.
